Daniel 7:27
“‘Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.’”
Today’s Reading: Daniel 7:26-27
We encounter an interesting prophecy in our verse today. The second half of Daniel 7:27 we have heard many times before:
“His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.”
Jesus’s kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. We know that in the end, all rulers will worship and obey him. However, the first half of the verse reads:
“Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to the holy people of the Most High. “
All the kingdoms under heaven will be handed over to God’s holy people. Who are God’s holy people? What kingdoms will they receive exactly? Does “all the kingdoms” include Jesus’s kingdom or just all the others?
Let’s look at some other verses that say similar things:
“The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said: ‘The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign for ever and ever’” (Rev 11:15).
“Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: ‘Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah’” (Rev 12:10).
“I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended.) This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years” (Rev 20:4-6).
“Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen” (Rev 1:4-6).
Jesus sits on the throne of the kingdom of God. God gave him the power and authority to rule over it. These verses in Revelation speak of Jesus the Messiah receiving this kingdom. Revelation 20 also speaks about God’s people who died as martyrs. These martyrs along with other followers were seated on thrones and were given authority to judge. These followers appear to be ruling the kingdoms with Jesus. Jesus said as much during his ministry:
“You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel” (Luke 22:28-30).
“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom” (Luke 12:32).
Paul also wrote about God’s people ruling with Jesus:
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:4-7).
“We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light” (Col 1:9-12).
So if we pull all these Scriptures together, we know that Jesus is seated on his throne ruling over the kingdom of God. He will be given all the earthly kingdoms as well. All those who put their faith in Jesus will reign with him and he will give some of his people authority to judge and rule the nations. God’s people will inherit the kingdom of God and share in the glory of Jesus:
“Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory” (Rom 8:17).
