Isaiah 53:10
Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. (NIV)
Today’s Reading: Isaiah 53:10-12
The redeemed Jewish remnant looks back and says that Jesus will see his offspring. This is the first of three rewards for the Suffering Servant. So how will he will see his offspring? He was never married, had no children and he died. So what are they talking about? The author of Hebrews can help here:
“In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered” (Hebrews 2:10).
Through his suffering, Jesus provided salvation to many sons and daughters. These are supernatural or spiritual sons and daughters that will become sons and daughters of the One through whom everything exists.
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:3).
“So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ” (Galatians 3:26-27).
Also, this is an allusion to Jesus being raised from the dead. A dead man cannot see his offspring even if they were only spiritual offspring. He must be alive to see so we can deduce that Jesus would die but also be alive in order for this prophecy to be true. In fact, it is his earthly death that would allow him to see for all eternity this offspring.
The Hebrew word for see is rā’â which means “see.” This verb is in the imperfect tense meaning that Jesus would continually be able to see his offspring come into the family. Jesus watches from the other side of eternity all Jews and Gentiles putting their faith in his sacrifice and entering the family of God.
